I’m lucky to have a very stylish younger sister, whose closet is always expanding. Once in a while she does some organizing and dejunking, and I try to be there with open arms to recieve whatever she’s flinging! I’ve even offered to pay the shipping for her to send a box of hand me downs to me sight unseen. This shirt is one she gave me last year…and I love it.
How cute is the round, gathered detail on the neck and back? I also love the light weight cotton, and the darling print. However, I didn’t love the baggy middle…especially since it hit me at the midriff and I always had to add a layer beneath.
Welcome To Summer, hand me down shirt! At a baby shower last week I spotted this darling yellow leaf fabric and thought “that is just right for my hand me down remake!” So, layers and layers of ruffles later, I have an updated top that has good fit, good length and a little flair! I alsoshortened the sleeves (it’s 100 degrees in DC this week!) added the new fabric at the v neck to tie it in better.
I’m loving the layers, ruching and ruffles. I may go back and remove a little of the elastic thread through the middle so that the shirt still hangs freely rather than stretching around the contours of my middle. And, I think I’ll take a pattern from the top of this top to remake myself a totally new version of the original shirt with some extra length and tailoring. If you see me today, you’ll see it in person…if not you’ll have to wait for the next photo shoot:)

Soooo Cute!!! I just found you through Design Mom and I'm so excited to examine every nook and cranny of your site.
I found your blog through Design Mom, as well and love this top! How did you do it? It's perfect!
Lonica,
It was a bit of a process…I cut the top off about 4" below the bust and actually sewed and old white tee and the hand me down shirt together with elastic thread to create the first tier of ruffles. I then cut the top off of the tee, leaving just the plain bodice as a base on which to sew the additional rows of ruffles. I sewed each row with elastic bobbin thread, pulling the tee fabric tight as I went so as to create the gather. I finished each ruffle with a rolled hem on the serger, as well as the sleeves-once I had cut them to 5". The neckline was as simple as creating a 1/4" bias tape with my own fabric by ironing both edges of a 1" strip towards the center, then folding. I pinned along the edge, over the previous binding and then just unpicked the very corners of the collar so I could tuck the new binding under and stitch in place. So…that was it! A fun and creative process that I think I'll try again on another shirt in the future (ruffles are so in right now, eh?)
