Unfinished Projects

So, my big No Resolution for New Years was genius: finish my unfinished projects. The idea was that I would stop adding new things to my plate, and take a few weeks (for that is truly all it would take!!) to wrap up loose ends. I promptly wrote all of them that I could think of up on the chalkboard wall in our kitchen.
I’m obviously not a real genius, since in this last month I have checked off no “Unfinished” boxes, but I have created a maternity wardrobe, designed our Valentine’s Day card (oh, you wait to see!!), re-made a car-seat cover for my new nephew, potty-trained Milo, watched American Idol, re-designed all of the powerpoint slides for the classes I teach at work, accepted an offer to help with a new website (very exciting…tell you all about it soon…) and begun decorating the boys’ room.
Hmm. Maybe I’ll get on these boxes tomorrow.

I really want to break into the world of sewing, but don't exactly know where to start. Do you have any good, affordable ideas for a poor college student out here in Utah County?? I just don't even know where to begin :)

And I love your adorable blog!

@Keri, I work as an RN Diabetes Educator at a hospital about 25 minutes away from my house. It's the greatest job ever! I'm only there 4 hours on Wednesday mornings and 4-5 hours on Thursday evenings, and I basically just teach classes to people with Diabetes (nutrition, exercise therapy, stress relief, and how to manage blood sugar levels.) Oh, and everything else in my life happens during Milo's nap time! Luckily, he's a good sleeper so I get about 2-3 hours each day to use as I will!!

    @ Rebecca,

I'm excited for you to begin your sewing adventures! You have a couple options for beginning. First, you need a machine to use. Depending on your budget and commitment level, you could look for one on craigslist, or just borrow one from a friend/family member until you feel comfortable (or save up!)

Next, you'll need some thread and fabric. Thread is cheap, a dollar or so. Fabric is easy to come by. As a beginner (okay, and as an experienced seamstress) I always recommend using things you have: an old sheet, clothes you don't wear anymore, etc. Material is material, especially for learning!

Lastly, you need to choose a project to complete. Whether pillows, a shirt, or a formal, just be prepared to make a lot of mistakes (that you will learn from!) there are hundreds of tutorials online for making just about anything you can think of! I'd gear up and go for it!

Let me know how you do!

    xo
